Join Mohawk artist Wilma Cook Zumpano as she leads you through the steps required to make a Haudenosaunee beaded change purse. Students will use velvet and cotton to create the purse, glass beads to create floral designs and edging, and sewing ribbon and a snap to complete the purse. All materials are included in the workshop fee (students should bring scissors for cutting fabric). This workshop is suitable for teenagers and adults. Some hand-sewing experience is helpful but not required.
Wilma (Kawennaronnion) Cook Zumpano, Akwesasne Mohawk, Wolf Clan, has been making native garments and keepsakes since her teen years. She has presented her artwork at the New York State Fair and many museums and juried shows across the country. She has provided educational presentations at schools and historical groups and has taught multiple beading classes using patterns and designs that are well over one hundred years old.
